REPORT: TOWN B 2-4 SUNDERLAND

3 April 2024

Young Terriers suffer defeat at home in Central League game

- Huddersfield Town B 2-4 Sunderland
- Terriers second best this afternoon
- Goals from Thomas and Eccleston

Despite taking an early lead, the Huddersfield Town B Team suffered a 4-2 defeat against Sunderland at the Millers Oils High Performance Complex on Wednesday afternoon.

Goals from Peter Thomas and Neo Eccleston saw Town take the lead during the first half of Wednesday's Central League game, however a penalty followed by three goals in the second half saw the visitors walk away victorious.

Our Young Terriers started the game strong, with their first chance coming within the first five minutes of play, as Kieran Phillips found Shane Maroodza in the box - however, his shot curled just wide of the post.

Both Brahima Diarra and Phillips worked their way into the box once again during the opening ten minutes, however their attempts were well defended by the visitors to prevent them taking the lead.

Sunderland did carry a threat at the other end but an excellent block from both David Adewoju and Charles Ondo denied them any clear cut chances at goal.

In almost immediate retaliation, Maroodza looked to find Cameron Ashia upfield but the pass just escaped our new number 10 who couldn't quite reach the ball as it entered the final third.

However, just two minutes later, Giosue Bellagambi found Phillips on the right wing, who made an excellent run, crossing the ball into the box where Peter Thomas was patiently waiting to shoot past the 'keeper and into the back of the net.

Shortly after, Town were forced into their first change as Thomas was substituted just past the half hour mark following a head injury, being replaced by Zak Abbott.

The Terriers had a handful of chances towards the latter stages of the first half, with Cian Philpott shooting just wide, alongside a shot from Phillips' deflecting before hitting the woodwork to deny the striker getting his name on the scoresheet.

Despite these chances not being converted, an exceptional run from Neo Eccleston doubled our lead, as he worked his way around the defence from outside the box before slotting the ball past the Sunderland 'keeper with ease.

Taking the ball back to their own half just before the half-time whistle, Town conceded a penalty, allowing the visitors' number nine to convert from the spot and claw a goal back.

Returning after the break, the visiting team capitalised on the chances presented to them, scoring three times in the final 30 minutes to seal the win.

Town did have a fair few chances themselves during the second half - with Bellagambi also performing some exceptional saves - however our B Team couldn't make the most of them on Wednesday afternoon, and were ultimately second best on the day.
